Field Hockey sweeps Big East honors

Gonzalez was a member of Team USA at the 2008 Pan American Junior Championships in Mexico City.

University of Connecticut sophomore Melissa Gonzalez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) was named Big East Offensive Player of the Week, and junior goalkeeper Andrea Mainiero (Emmaus, Pa.) was named Big East Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 19, conference officials announced today. [Oct. 20].

The Huskies swept the conference weekly honors following a 2-0 stretch that saw them post back-to-back shutouts.

UConn opened the week with a 3-0 blanking of Northeastern at home, before following up with a 1-0 road win at No. 1 Syracuse, handing the Orange their first loss this season.

Gonzalez claimed her first career Big East Offensive Player of the Week award following a stretch that saw her open play as a member of Team USA at the 2008 Pan American Junior Championships in Mexico City. She scored 4 goals while leading the USA entry to a 4-0-1 record and a gold medal.

The sophomore closed out the week by returning to the Huskies in time to score the game-winning goal in UConn’s 1-0 victory at No.1 Syracuse on Oct. 18.

Mainiero was named Big East Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in her career. after posting two shutouts, to increase her season total to five.

Mainiero made a total of 7 saves over the two games, including a critical 6 in UConn’s 1-0 win at No. 1 Syracuse.

UConn has garnered a total of three Big East weekly honors this season; senior Jennifer Kleinhans (Mannheim, Germany) was previously recognized this season.

The No. 9 Huskies, 13-1 overall this season, will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 22 when they travel to face Boston University.

UConn-West Virginia football game to air live on ESPN

The game kicks off at noon on Nov. 1 at Rentschler Field.

The University of Connecticut vs. West Virginia football game on Saturday, Nov. 1 will kickoff at noon. and will be televised by the Big East Network via ESPN Regional Television.

The game – played at Rentschler Field – will be seen live in Connecticut on MyTV9-WCTX.

The game will also be seen live on SportsNet New York (SNY) from New York City, in addition to a number of other affiliates.

Day one at NEIGA golf championship: Huskies tied for 4th place

UConn, Bryant University, Central Connecticut State University and Post University were tied for fourth place at 313.

The University of Connecticut men’s golf team stands tied for fourth place in the 43-team field after day one of competition [Oct. 20] at the 73rd Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship hosted by Salem State College and held at the Captain’s Course.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with 18 holes of action

Sacred Heart University led the field with a score of 302, followed by Dartmouth College and Husson University at 311.

UConn, Bryant University, Central Connecticut State University and Post University were tied for fourth place at 313.

Pat Fillian of Sacred Heart and Michael Amato of Brown University each shot an even-par 72 on the day to share the overall lead by three shots over Tom Ursa of CCSU.

UConn sophomore Matt Dubrowski shot a 77 to stand in a tie for 14th place, while Husky freshmen Brian Hwang and Matt Carroll each shot 78 to stand in a tie for 20th place.

College students honored for high tech environmental inventions

Each award-winning team qualifies to receive a grant of up to $90,000 to further develop their design and potentially bring it to the marketplace. Previous P3 award winners have started successful businesses and are globally marketing their technologies.

Courtney, students at Capitol to testify on student loan interest rates

Rep. Courtney introduced the Student Loan Relief Act (H.R. 1595) to lock in the lower rate for two years, which would allow the Congress the time it needs to craft a long-term solution to the student loan debt crisis.
