Support groups and childcare classes are offered in January at Windham Hospital

Classes include Infant Massage, Infant and Child CPR, and Healthcare Provider Basic Life Skills.

Windham Community Memorial Hospital offers a number of classes, workshops and special events in January focused on health issues such as diabetes and cancer, and several related to childcare.

Programs beginning in January 2009 include:

Cancer Support Group

The Cancer Support Group will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Mansfield Senior Center. Regular meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at the same time and location. Family and friends are welcome.

Breast Cancer Support Group

The Breast Cancer Support Group will meet on Monday, Jan. 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the 3rd Floor West Classroom at Windham Hospital. Newly-diagnosed patients, as well as longterm survivors, are encouraged to attend, as well as their family and caregivers. Diabetes Education Series

A 4-class series about diabetes – its long term complications and dietary considerations. Participants must attend all four classes and pre-register by calling 456-6727. Also, a physician’s referral is required. Classes are held in the 3rd Floor West Classroom. Most insurances will cover the cost of the classes. There are two sessions on Jan. 13, 15, 27, 29 between 1 – 3 p.m. and 4 – 6 p.m.

Diabetes Support Group

A diabetes support group is held the first Wednesday of each month. Anyone with diabetes can attend. The next meeting is on Jan. 7, 2009, at two times – at 1 p.m. and at 7 p.m. 0 in the 3rd Floor West Classroom. For more information, please call 860.456.6727.

Healthcare Provider BLS (Basic Life Skills) Class

A Healthcare Provider Basic Life Skills Class will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 13 and on Thursday, Jan. 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the 4 West Classroom. The registration fee for BLS Full Certification is $75, and $45 for Re-certification (prices include a BLS book). Participants must bring their old card to class as well as their book. Prepared Childbirth Education Classes

Windham Hospital offers an all-day “marathon” Childbirth education class on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $65 for families delivering their babies at Windham Hospital and $75 for families delivering elsewhere. Participants can also register for a Baby Basics class (fee: $10 if combined with the Prepared Childbirth class). For more information or to register, call 456-6894.

Lactation/Breastfeeding Class or consultation

A Breastfeeding class or consultation can be scheduled with Pamela Yerkes, a certified lactation consultant. This class is free. For more information, please call 860.456.6973.

Mommy & Me Luncheons (in English)

Windham Hospital offers a Mommy and Me Luncheon, a social support network for mothers and their infants (age up to 9 months). The group meets twice a month, on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m, in the Windham Hospital Education Center. The next meeting dates are Jan. 7, and Jan. 21. Women – and their children up to age 9 months – are welcome to attend. There is a $5 fee which will be waived for anyone with state insurance or receiving assistance from WIC.

UConn men's hockey falls to Merrimack 5-2 at Toyota UConn Classic

The Huskies are back in action Jan. 3, 2009 at 7:05 against Air Force at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum at UConn.

Despite a two-goal effort by sophomore Justin Hernandez, the University of Connecticut men’s hockey team fell to Merrimack 5-2 in the consolation round match of the Toyota UConn Classic at the Dec. 31, 2008 game.

The Huskies kept the game to within one goal, until the Warriors blew the game open with less than a minute remaining via an open net and last-second goal.

Merrimack took third place honors in the 16th UConn Classic and improved their record to 5-9-3 on the season. UConn fell to 4-12-1 on the year.

The Warriors got out to a 2-0 start for the second straight game, when Fraser Allen and Rob Ricci each tallied a goal.

Ricci ended the day with three points for Merrimack.

They were able to extend their lead to three, early into the second period, on a short handed goal by Joe Loprieno – but UConn cut into the three-goal lead when Hernandez scored his first goal of the game, halfway into the second period, capitalizing on a power play opportunity.

Sophomore Jason Krispel added the assist for his team-leading 12th of the year, which is also good enough for seventh best in Atlantic Hockey.

With less than five minutes remaining in the third period, Hernandez cut that lead down even more, yet again on a power play opportunity, this time with senior Sean Erickson and sophomore Andrew Olson adding helpers.

But that would be as close as the Huskies would come.

After pulling their goalie junior Beau Erickson – with a minute and a half remaining in the game – Merrimack would tack on an empty net goal and with just 4.5 seconds left – a last minute goal to bring their lead back to three, capturing third place in the tournament.

The Huskies are back in action Jan. 3, 2009 at 7:05 against No. 11 Air Force at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum at UConn.
