Cool Husky Stats for this season

  • Connecticut point guard Renee Montgomery began the 2008-09 season as arguably the nation’s most experienced player - Montgomery enters Wednesday’s game vs. Providence with 134 career starts - the most of any player nationally - and 13 more than the next closest player, Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris (121)

  • And Montgomery can claim a streak of 127 consecutive starts - also the highest number nationally
  • UConn’s Maya Moore is currently averaging 19.8 ppg; only two players in UConn’s history have averaged 20.0 ppg or more for a season since Geno Auriemma took over as coach in 1985-86 - Kerry Bascom did it three times (1989-91) and Nykesha Sales posted a 20.9 ppg average in 1997-98

  • And Moore currently boasts 495 points this season through the first 25 games - at her current pace, Moore would eclipse Kara Wolters’ UConn single-season scoring record of 694 points set in 1995-96

  • Entering Wednesday’s game against Providence, UConn has won 126 of its last 134 games against BIG EAST opponents

  • And UConn enters Wednesday’s game a perfect 25-0; the 25-0 start to the 2008-09 season marks the program’s best since ripping off a 31-0 start in 2002-03

  • UConn has won 33 consecutive regular season games to date, going back to a 73-71 loss at Rutgers on Feb.5, 2008. Over the 33-game skein, the Huskies have averaged a 29.8 margin of victory

  • UConn won its first 25 games of the season by an average of 32.8 points - which ranks as the largest average margin of victory among NCAA national leaders

  • And the Huskies have posted nine wins by margins of greater than 40 points over its first 25 games this season, and 14 wins by 30 points or more

  • the Huskies have won 108 consecutive games against non-ranked opponents. (UConn last lost to an unranked foe on Dec. 21, 2004 at Arizona State, 61-50)

  • the Huskies will also look to run their record in BIG EAST play to a perfect 11-0 for the seventh time since 1994-95

For the 16th week, both the UConn women’s and men’s basketball teams are ranked No. 1 nationally in the Associated Press Poll, which was released Feb. 16. The women’s team has been ranked No. 1 for each of the opening 15 polls this season, beginning with the pre-season rankings; the men’s No. 1 ranking on Feb. 16 marks the third week this season they’ve earned the top spot.

UConn players Maya Moore, Renee Montgomery and Tina Charles have each been named to the 50-player early season “Watch List” for the 2008-09 Naismith Trophy, which recognizes the national player of the year. UConn has had three different players claim the award in its history, with Rebecca Lobo (1995), Sue Bird (2002) and Diana Taurasi (2002, 2003) earning previous honors. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T will be awarded at the 2009 NCAA Women’s Final Four in St. Louis, Mo.
