stop-and-shop-logo-texturedFollowing notification from its manufacturer, the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company has recalled the following Stop & Shop Non Fat Dry Milk products:

– Stop and Shop Nonfat Dried Milk, 16 ounce size, UPC – 21120-00056, Code – FEB 0511S

– Stop and Shop Nonfat Dried Milk, 32 ounce size, UPC 21120-00052, Code – FEB 1211S

The items were removed from store shelves because they were produced with nonfat dried milk that is part of a national recall by Plainview Milk and may have been contaminated with salmonella bacteria.

Customers who have purchased the product should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to any Stop & Shop for a full refund.

Salmonella is one of the most common bacterial food-borne illnesses, however it can be life-threatening, especially for those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.

The most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours.  Other symptoms can include chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.

Stop & Shop recently also recalled its store-made ground beef – for more information about that recall, go to http://www.stopandshop.com/customer_service/product_recalls.htm?linkid=H

Sorting recyclables gets easier

July 1, 2009 Local News Comments Off

plastic-paintdaubs-htnpNow you can feel a little less guilty about throwing away your yogurt containers or that empty tub the potato salad came in.

Willimantic Waste Paper, the recycling processor contracted by the town of Mansfield, now accepts most plastic containers for recycling.

Until now, only plastic containers marked with No. 1 and No. 2 codes could be recycled.

Now, recyclable plastic containers include buckets, take-out containers, yogurt containers and cups.

You are still asked to remove all food and rinse out containers before placing them out for collection. They should be grouped with your metal cans and glass bottles.

Some plastics still cannot be recycled – these include garden hoses, plastic bags and any kind of Styrofoam.

But Styrofoam peanuts are accepted for reuse at the Mansfield transfer station.

And plastic bags are recycled at the transfer station, Big Y, Champlion’s General Store on South Eagleville Road (just past the intersection with Route 275, towards Eagleville Dam.)

Other grocery stores in Willimantic also have recycling boxes for recycling plastic bags near the entry, including Stop & Shop.

For more information, contact Mansfield Recycling Coordinator Virginia Walton at 860-429-3333 or waltonvd@mansfieldct.org  Or visit the Web site at http://www.mansfieldct.org/town/current/public_works/recycling_and_refuse_news.pdf
