Tree Lightings, holiday crafts,Tip a firefighter among activities this weekend

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26

HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIR
St. Philip the Apostle Church, Route 44, Ashford, will host a holiday craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Forty crafters for holiday shopping will be available. Two chefs creating soups and cheese and pierogies with onions. Hamburgers and hot dogs available. Free admission.

OPEN STUDIO
Featuring the work of several local artists, Joseph Ferrara Community Center, adjacent to the Chaplin Public Library and Senior Center, 132 Chaplin St., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free.

THANKSGIVING WITH THE HALES
A special Thanksgiving event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Nathan Hale Homestead, 2299 South St., Coventry. “Thanksgiving with the Hales” costs $10/$8 members. Info: (860) 742-6917 or hale@ctlandmarks.org.

HAM & BEAN SUPPER
A ham and bean supper is being sponsored by The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 52, from 5: 30 to 6: 30 p. m., at the Knights of Columbus, 138 Snake Hill Road, Coventry. Cost is $8 adult, $4 children, free for children 5 and younger.

BUFFET BREAKFAST

A buffet breakfast is slated at the Knights of Columbus, 41 Club Road, Windham, from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Children under 5 free, 6-12, $5.50, seniors, $6, adults over 12 $6:50. Take-outs available.

COFFEE AND CRAFTS
Coffee and crafts will highlight a program from 10 a.m. to noon. Fee: $10. Event is at the Mansfield Art Center, 285 Stafford Road (Route 32), Mansfield. Participants can even wear pajamas if they like. All ages welcome. Info: (860) 423-1819.

ADVENT ACTIVITY
Christmas begins at the Blue Slope Country Museum, 138 Blue Hill Road, Franklin, with events at 1 p.m., 1:45 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:15 p.m. Cost is $7, ages 3 and up. Take a horse-drawn wagon ride, sing traditional Christmas carols, Make an old-fashioned ornament, enjoy wassail punch and cocoa. Space is limited. Reservations a must. TIP A FIREFIGHTER
The Willimantic Fire Department, Local 1033, will be waiting tables at Fred’s Brick House Cafe, 1681 W. Main St., Willimantic, from 3 to 9 p.m. All tips will go to help Jerry’s Kids at the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

VICTORIAN NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION
The Willimantic VNA will conduct its monthly meeting at 3:30 p.m. at 869 Main St., Willimantic. Guest speaker: Pamela Wright, Topic: “Creating a Willimantic Wildlife Habitat.” Potluck dinner to follow, Opus, 877 Main St., Willimantic.

WINDHAM CENTER TREE LIGHTING
A tree lighting ceremony will take place at the Windham Center green, Route 203, Route 14 and Plains Road. at 6 p.m. Event to be fol­lowed by refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus. Sponsored by the Windham Center Fire Department.

TREE LIGHTING AND CAROL SING
First Church of Christ Congregational, 549 Storrs Road, Mansfield, will host a tree lighting event at 6:30 p.m. Reception following in Fellowship Hall.

Paving Storrs Road – Route 195 in Mansfield

Milling and paving of Storrs Road (Route 195) – part of improvements being made to this main roadway associated with the Storrs Center development – is expected to begin on Friday, May 17, 2013.

As scheduled, the paving should be complete by Tuesday, May 21. Poor weather may delay these efforts.

Malloy proclaims National Teacher Day in CT

As a social studies teacher at Berlin High School, David Bosso has been able to enrich his teaching about world history and cultures with trips to Ghana, China, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Egypt.  On his blog, Global Wanderings, Bosso writes, "I have a keen desire to not only educate my students about the world around them, but also to learn as much as possible to better inform my own knowledge base."

National Teacher Day is part of Teacher Appreciation Week, which is celebrated May 6-10, 2013.
