Edwin O. Smith High School’s Math Team finished 3rd at the State Mathematics Meet in Ridgefield, CT on Wednesday, April 6.

After falling back early, the team made a final comeback to finish right behind Choate Rosemary and Fairfield Warde High School in the medium school division.

This is quite an accomplishment. Consider the competition… Warde is known for its success in math leagues since the 70s and 80′s when it dominated district and state competitions and occasionally won regional (New England) championships.  Of course, everyone has heard of Choate, a prestigious private school located in Wallingford.

By placing 3rd, the E.O. Smith Team qualified for the New England Regional competition, which will be held at the end of April in Canton, MA.

Prior to the state event, the team finished the regular season as the overall 2nd place team in the Greater New London County Mathematics League.

The team competed very well in the local league; it finished right behind Marianapolis and ahead of the Pomfret School.

Coincidentally, had E.O. Smith competed against these two private school teams in their division, E.O. Smith would have scored well above them.

The state meet win was made possible by the outstanding performances of Jessica Hyde, Ryan Seery, Paula Chen, Ethan Baker and Co-captains Sumaali Chheda and Joel Accorsi. Joel earned the distinction of the highest-scoring junior in the state with a perfect score.
