Discover the art of puppetry at free UConn event Feb 9

PUPPET SLAM at UConn poster Feb 9 2013This weekend, UConn Puppet Slams presents an exciting array of bold new works for puppet theater by vibrant puppet artists from New York City, Boston and the University of Connecticut – presented by The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry (BIMP) and The University of Connecticut Puppet Arts Program.

The popular UConn Puppet Slam series of exciting new works for puppetry will present its next installment from 8-10 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 in a free performance at the Studio Theater in the Drama and Music Building on UConn’s Main Campus.

This exciting array of short-form puppetry will feature professional puppeteers from the Northeast and new works by students from UConn’s famed Puppet Arts Program.

The UConn Winter Puppet Slam will include Great Small Works’ toy theater spectacle “Living Newspaper”; an excerpt from Spybird Theater‘s new production “Eye of the Storm,” performed by Jana Zeller, and featuring the classic German hand-puppet figures Kasper and Gretel; and new works by Jim Napolitano of Nappy’s Puppets and Hartford puppeteer S.B. Parks!

The UConn Winter Puppet Slam will also include new puppet productions by Puppet Arts students including Penny Benson, Carianne Hoff, Seth Shaffer, Sarah Nolen, Anna Fitzgerald, Sarah Hall, and Dana Samborski.

The event is free but donations are greatly appreciated!

Want to be an extra at a Storrs Center photo shoot?

“We’d love for you to participate in the photo shoot if you can. ‘Extras’ will be needed to show people walking, peeking in storefronts, dining outdoors or interacting with friends, children or pets.”

Paving Storrs Road – Route 195 in Mansfield

Milling and paving of Storrs Road (Route 195) – part of improvements being made to this main roadway associated with the Storrs Center development – is expected to begin on Friday, May 17, 2013.

As scheduled, the paving should be complete by Tuesday, May 21. Poor weather may delay these efforts.

Malloy proclaims National Teacher Day in CT

As a social studies teacher at Berlin High School, David Bosso has been able to enrich his teaching about world history and cultures with trips to Ghana, China, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Egypt.  On his blog, Global Wanderings, Bosso writes, "I have a keen desire to not only educate my students about the world around them, but also to learn as much as possible to better inform my own knowledge base."

National Teacher Day is part of Teacher Appreciation Week, which is celebrated May 6-10, 2013.
