On Saturday, Aug. 24 2013 Kids Who Tri Succeed is hosting a triathlon at Mansfield Middle School, located at 205 Spring Hill Road. (In the event of rain, the triathlon will be held Aug. 31)
For safety reasons, some surrounding roads will be closed.
Clover Mill Road between the Public Works access road, and Spring Hill Road between Clover Mill Road and Maple Road will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 9:30 a.m. to about noon.
The road closures have been permitted by the Town of Mansfield and will be handled by the Mansfield Resident Troopers office.
Kids Who Tri Succeed is a USAT-sanctioned triathlon for children ages 4-14. Now in its eighth year, this event shows kids how much fun working towards a fitness goal is, and increases their confidence as a result.
The triathlon consists of swimming, running and bicycling. (The swimming portion of the race is at Bicentennial Pond.) A map of the routes for the different age categories is available on the web site http://kidswhotrisucceed.com in PDF format.
This year’s event participation is capped at 150 entrants.
Online registration for the event is now closed, but as of this posting, there are 26 openings for registration the day of the event.
Registration/check-in is from 8 to 8:45 a.m., followed by instructions for the course at 9 a.m. and the beginning of the triathlon at 9:30 a.m.
The fee to register onsite the day of the race is $25. There are no transfers or refunds. Also, USAT Membership is required, which is an additional $10 one-day fee or $15 annual membership fee payable on the day of the event.
USAT membership will be checked for all pre-registered entrants – please bring proof of your membership or purchase.

Here are some additional FAQs
Q: What do I need to bring?
A: All participants will need a bathing suit, T-shirt, bicycle, bike helmet (BIKE HELMETS ARE MANDATORY), small towel and shoes for the bike/run.
You may also want to bring goggles, socks (depending on the type of shoe being used for the bike/run), water bottle, swim cap, sunscreen and a small basin for your racer to rinse his/her feet before putting on socks/shoes.
Water and food will be provided after the race for all participants.
Q: Will the event be held if it is raining?
A: We will make every effort to hold the event on 8/24/13 and will only move to the rain date of 8/31/13 if absolutely necessary. Typically the race will be held if the forecast is for light rain but not if there is thunder/lightning. Please check the website http://kidswhotrisucceed.com on the morning of the race if there is any question about the weather. We will post any updates by 7 a.m. on race day.
Q: Is this a “super competitive” race?
A: We encourage participants of all abilities to “tri” out this race! We have had many repeat racers as well as first-time triathletes. Our focus is on encouraging a love of fitness for your child.
Q: Can I accompany my young child during the race?
A: You may accompany your young child (age group 4-6 years old) on the bike and run portions of the race, but not on the swim. For the youngest age group, the swim is in the shallow end of the pond where the water will only be waist high (most children in this age group “swim” with their feet touching the bottom of the pond).
Q: Can my young child use a bike with training wheels?
Q: Can my young child use flotation devices?
A: For the youngest age group only (ages 4-6), your child may use water wings or a swim vest. However, keep in mind that for this age group, the swim is in the shallow part of the pond where the water is only waist deep, so your child will be able to touch the bottom at all times. There will also be lifeguards on duty.
Q: Can my child be assigned to the same wave as a sibling or friend?
A: Yes. If you pre-register, you will be able to make that request as part of the registration process. If you are registering on race day (if spots are still available), you must ask during the registration process. Once registration is closed, no changes can be made.
Q: Is the child’s age based on how old they are on race day, or how old they will be by 12/31/13?
A: All age group assignments are based on the age of the child on race day.
Q: For the results, do you provide an overall time for all events combined, or splits for the swim/bike/run?
A: We will provide splits for the swim/bike/and run. Any time that the child spends in transition between the swim and bike and between the bike and run will be included in the bike time.
Q: I’m traveling to the race from out of town. Are there any hotels nearby?
A: Here are some hotel options in Mansfield within 5 miles of the race (in order of proximity): Altnaveigh Inn & Restaurant (860-429-4990); Fitch House B&B (860-456-0922); Best Western (860-423-8451).
