On Wednesday, April 24, 2013, the International Center at the University of Connecticut co-sponsors a World Book Night/Daytime celebration during the regularly scheduled Coffee Hour at 2:30 p.m.

The public is invited.

Partnering with Laurie Tompkins from the IC, Ruth Hartunian-Alumbaugh will distribute to international students specially-printed copies of her favorite book pick.

World Book Night “officially” is recognized on April 23 but the celebration on the UConn campus is planned for when most students would normally be on campus.

The celebration is at McMahon Hall, 2011 Hillside Road.

Ruth will give out copies of her favorite book from the list of 30 books provided by the WBN event coordinators, The Phantom Tollbooth.

Fishing season opens – get info here about where to fish in Connecticut

Opening day of the Trout Fishing Season is Saturday, April 20 and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has the state’s rivers, streams, lakes and ponds stocked and ready.

Approximately 381,000 trout have already been released this spring into 102 lakes and ponds and 200 rivers and streams throughout Connecticut and are awaiting Opening Day anglers.

DEEP’s spring trout-stocking effort began in early March and will continue through the end of May. When spring stocking is completed, DEEP expects to have stocked about 630,000 trout.

Windham Hospital to host “Be the Match” bone marrow drive

At least 70 percent of patients awaiting a bone marrow transplant don’t have a donor in their family.

Windham Hospital is teaming up with the National Marrow Donor Program and Hartford HealthCare to help give hope to patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases.

The hospital will host the “Be the Match” bone marrow registry on Tuesday, April 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Bernard Desrosier room on the third floor of the hospital.

Thousands of patients with blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, sickle cell and other life-threatening diseases need a bone marrow transplant.

Official groundbreaking ceremonies for a dedicated, new practice facility for the University of Connecticut’s championship men’s and women’s basketball programs were held Tuesday (April 16) on the site of the facility’s home behind Gampel Pavilion on the Storrs campus.

The event, which occurred a week after the Huskies brought home their eighth national title, tying Tennessee for the most wins in women’s basketball history, was attended by officials from the University, the UConn Foundation, by alumni and donors and by several present and former players, as well as students.

“This is a landmark day for UConn,” said UConn President Susan Herbst.  “Our coaches and athletes have made UConn basketball the envy of the nation.  They earned this facility with their hard work and their dedication.”

CT Police make sexual assault arrest in Mansfield

Connecticut State Police report that on April 15, 2013 at approximately 11:45 p.m., Troop C Tolland received a 911 call from a resident on Eagle Court in Mansfield (Storrs), CT.

Police say the caller claimed a female was outside of his residence suffering from severe multiple injuries.

Police say the female victim suffered from multiple injuries. She was treated by EMS at the scene, transported by ambulance to Windham Hospital and transferred by helicopter to Hartford Hospital where she is currently in stable condition.

CT DEEP Commissioner to demonstrate electric-vehicle service at Storrs Center

CT DEEP Commissioner Esty is expected to charge his Chevy Volt at one of the stations – there are four Level 2 retractable electric charging stations in the Mansfield Garage – and a Hertz car-share program will be introduced.

Connecticut Connecticut DEEP Commissioner Dan Esty is expected to join Mansfield Mayor Betsy Paterson and other local dignitaries beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16 to tour the Storrs Center development.

The visit is meant to highlight energy and pro-environment aspects of the development, including electric vehicle charging stations for the public.

Commissioner Esty was originally scheduled to visit Storrs Center and talk about the electric-vehicle leasing service on March 19, but that visit was rescheduled because of bad weather.

His April 16 visit begins at the Storrs Center Parking Garage and then moves to the businesses on Dog Lane.

The lower level of the parking garage features electric vehicle charging stations for the public. Commissioner Esty will park his Chevy Volt and connect it to a charger.

There are four, Level-2 retractable electric charging stations – and a Hertz car-share program will be introduced.

This demonstration will be followed with a speaking program on the sidewalk along Dog Lane, outside of retail shops and restaurants. (In the event of rain, the group will move inside the Dog Lane Café).

A reception will follow at Dog Lane Café.
